“Three years after Amazon caught a federal monopoly lawsuit, sellers say the company’s fees and policies are even worse,” according to ILSR’s Ron Knox in The American Prospect. One of those sellers, Jack Nekhala, shares the harmful impact of these fees and policies with Ron, saying that Amazon’s monopoly conduct is “like a train that’s coming head-on, and if we don’t see this, if we don’t stop this train, it’s going to bulldoze everything that it goes through.”
But the market won’t stop this train. Ron writes that online sellers have no real alternative to selling on Amazon because they can’t afford to leave the platform. And a behavioral fix is not going to solve this either. “Only the federal case can deliver what will likely be necessary to truly and finally inject needed competition in the online retail industry: significant changes to the structure, and not just the behavior, of Amazon itself.
