At the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, we recognize the power of language in communicating ideas and building understanding. As such, we are committed to using language on our website that is respectful, inclusive, and accurate in describing a world that is messy, dynamic, and complex.
We recognize that language is an imperfect art, and there is rarely full consensus on the terminology used to describe people and groups. We acknowledge that we will inevitably make mistakes, and we ask for grace as we navigate this complicated landscape.
We refer to several resources to guide our efforts in improving our language use on the website, including the APA Style Guide’s principles of bias-free language, the Diversity Style Guide, and the Movement Strategy Center’s glossary. And we welcome input from allies and partners when they believe we can improve our use of language.
We acknowledge that with 50 years of content and the fluidity of language, some of our earlier work may not reflect the language we would use today. We preserve it not only for the role we think it has played in advancing our policy objectives throughout the decades but also to acknowledge our history and learn from it. Again, we ask for grace and invite readers to reach out with suggestions on how we can better address sensitive topics.
Please connect with our communications director, Reggie Rucker, to provide feedback on our language usage on the website. Your insights are invaluable as we strive to create a more inclusive and respectful space for all.
