As we close in on 50 years of building local power and fighting corporate control, 2023 was in its own right a milestone year in beating back the pro-bigness, neoliberal framework that has dominated U.S. policy and thinking for a generation. Elected officials, advocates, and individuals like you all shared in the progress of the last year creating opportunities to build stronger, more equitable, and more sustainable communities.

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance has worked hard to advance new state and federal policy, demand aggressive action by federal agencies, and continue developing research and intellectual frameworks to support antimonopoly thinking and solutions at the local level.

We are incredibly proud of ILSR’s accomplishments over the last year and thrilled with the collaborations we’ve had with so many diverse partners. Our 2023 annual report highlights the work we’ve done this year, including on-the-ground technical assistance, in-depth research and analysis, and coalition building with grassroots organizations, to empower local communities and help instill racial and economic justice throughout our economy. In hundreds of media stories covering our work, ILSR is influencing and expanding public understanding of monopoly problems across the economy and building support for taking action to counter it.

With 50 years of hard-fought victories and indelible lessons in tow, ILSR is better positioned than ever to support our growing small business, labor, and farmer alliances along with coalitions of environmental, health, and racial justice advocates that are key to enacting real checks on corporate power and creating durable racial and economic equity across America.

DONATE NOW

Nearly every day we hear from local leaders and advocates who rely on our resources and expertise to make change in their communities. We couldn’t do it without your support. Donations from individuals are an important and unique source of revenue that gives us the ability to be creative in meeting the ever-growing need for solutions.

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift today to sustain our work and support the movement for healthy, equitable, and self-reliant communities. We look forward to making an even greater impact in the coming year.

Special Addition

Once again, our annual report was bursting at the seams this year — we had so much to share! But rather than add more pages and more reading for you, we decided to add a video feature to underscore the progress we made in 2023 and set the stage for what’s to come in 2024. Enjoy this highlight reel from ILSR initiative directors.

ILSR’s initiative directors — Brenda Platt, Christopher Mitchell, John Farrell, and Stacy Mitchell — reflect on the stories and accomplishments that defined ILSR’s work in 2023.
