    After struggling for months to survive, more than 160,000 businesses across the U.S. have closed their doors permanently. On WBEZ: Chicago’s NPR News Source, host Justin Kaufmann talks to Angela Walker, a massage therapist, health coach, and owner of The Balance Warrior, a Lincoln Park small business that recently closed its doors permanently. ILSR’s Kennedy Smith joins the conversation to contextualize the state of small businesses during this pandemic.

    To keep money in a community, it really is crucial to support small businesses.

    She also emphasizes the role that state and local governments need to play in supporting small businesses and the economic, social, and cultural loss that communities are facing due to the closure of small businesses like Angela’s.

    I think that one of the things that has emerged through this pandemic is a new appreciation for the importance and significance of small businesses, what they bring to our communities and our lives, and what they provide for the economy.
