    Hauling and vehicle permits are a growing challenge for community-scale composters, particularly in a landscape where cities are seeking to contract with large-scale haulers for city-wide hauling. In this webinar, Navigating Hauling Permits as a Community Composter, we provided an overview of common requirements, challenges, possible solutions, and successes… and offered model language that community composters can advocate to include in local policies and contracts. Several community composters shared how they do their organics collection service, how they got necessary permits, and how they navigated barriers.

    Kourtnii Brown

    Common Compost
    Oakland, Calif.

    Kourtnii is a community gardener and compost enthusiast. She founded Common Compost in Oakland, Calif. as a way to realize the efficiency and benefits of composting with worms at an urban scale. Kourtnii is also passionate about sustainable food systems, having been a waitress at numerous farm-to-fork restaurants and active volunteer for community gardening in both D.C. and San Francisco over the past decade.

     

     

    Janelle Orsi

    Sustainable Economies Law Center
    Oakland, Calif.

    Janelle is a lawyer, advocate, writer, and cartoonist focused on cooperatives, land trusts, sustainable agriculture, compost law, community-owned energy, shared housing, and the creation of a more just and equitable society. She is co-founder and Executive Director of SELC and author of Practicing Law in the Sharing Economy.

     

     

    Molly Lindsay

    Community Compost Company
    New Paltz, N.Y.

    Molly is the Director of Operations at Community Compost Company, a women-owned business based in the Hudson Valley of NY and Northern NJ. The company offers food scrap collection to residents, businesses and institutions, and produces compost at farms, which is sold through their brand Hudson Soil Co.

     

     

    David Paull

    Atlanta, Ga.

    David Paull is co-founder and Chief Impact Officer at CompostNow. CompostNow is a subscription based compost collection service focused on diverting food waste from landfills and building healthy soil which employs over 50 full time soil slingers, route wranglers, and dirt dorks. David founded Compostwheels in Atlanta in 2012, which merged with CompostNow in 2017. As a Wisconsin native, David is passionate about good food, the environment, and societies role in designing resilient and regenerative communities.

     

     

    Kristen Baskin

    Kristen Baskin is the founder of Let Us Compost in Athens, Georgia and mother to three muddy daughters. She has been driving change in the Georgia composting industry since 2012.
