Axios investigates Walmart’s growing dominance of more than 200 U.S. grocery markets using research from ILSR. Axios explains how retail has become a driving force behind inequality, mapping how Walmart dominates grocery sales in many southern communities as well as cities and towns in the middle of the country. In related coverage, Axios detailed how Walmart has successfully avoided the antitrust spotlight quoting ILSR’s Independent Business Initiative Director, Stacy Mitchell.
Here’s an excerpt:
Walmart owns 50% or more of grocery sales in 203 U.S. markets, per an analysis by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit research and advocacy group that opposes concentrated economic power. In 38 of those markets, Walmart has 70% or more of the grocery sales…The bottom line: No grocer in U.S. history has ever been so dominant.
