Stacy Mitchell’s Statement on the EU’s Antitrust Charges Against Amazon

ILSR Co-Director Stacy Mitchell released the following statement regarding the news that the European Union will file antitrust charges against Amazon due to the company’s treatment of third-party sellers:

“There’s a growing consensus that Amazon’s monopoly power is a serious problem. This news is more evidence that this consensus is gathering steam.

The worry I have is that the EU won’t solve the underlying issue, which is structural in nature. The EU’s process is long and may lead only to a fine rather than a restructuring of Amazon. With Amazon taking advantage of the pandemic to further consolidate its grip on commerce, Congress needs to move quickly to wrap up its Big Tech investigation and develop legislation that can restore competition and safeguard the economy.”
