SF Weekly takes a closer look at San Francisco’s digital divide and what policy makers and Internet providers can do to fix it. Christopher Mitchell, director of ILSR’s Community Broadband Networks Initiative, highlights why city governments should invest in bringing high-quality Internet to low-income families. SF Weekly also cites ILSR’s recent report on San Francisco’s collaboration with a local Internet Service Provider to bring Internet to residents of public housing.
Here’s an excerpt:
“People who are in public housing who have high-quality internet access will be more likely to be able to get educational benefits, to improve their opportunities to apply for jobs, but also access government services, and as government services go to more and more of an online delivery mechanism, it will save all of us money in the management of those programs.”
