The Young Activist Club of Takoma Park, Maryland, is working to replace polystyrene (resin code #6, also known as styrofoam) used for food service ware in their school and their community, and to raise awareness in the wider community about its negative environmental and public health impacts. The Club has launched a No Styrofoam Business Pledge Campaign, in which the young activists are meeting with and asking local businesses to sign a pledge committing to not use polystyrene for food service ware. At least two dozen businesses and venues in Takoma Park have signed the pledge and display a “Polystyrene-Free” window sticker.
ILSR staff co-lead the Club and provide research and technical assistance. Read more.
