A new bill was introduced to the California Legislature, the “Electronics Right to Repair Act” (AB-2110). The bill will require that manufacturers make repair, diagnostic information, equipment, and service parts available to consumers and repair shops.<\/p>\n

This is a long time goal of ILSR Working Partner, The Repair Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In arguing for the legislation, the Assembly-member\u00a0Susan Talamantes Eggman, the bill’s sponsor, cites that it restores, “a practice that was taken for granted a generation ago.”<\/p>\n

Repairing electronic devices both cuts down on material usage and stimulates local economies by diverting these valuable materials to have a second life.<\/p>\n

Waste Dive reports that 16 states have introduced right to repair legislation. In 2018 an estimated 50 million tons will be generated worldwide; up from 45 million tons is 2016.<\/p>\n
