Christopher Mitchell, Director of ILSR’s Community Broadband Networks initiative, was a guest on NPR’s 1A. He discussed the barriers many Americans are facing as they try to get online to complete school assignments or work during the pandemic, and explained the value of local solutions for expanding Internet access.

I find it embarrassing. We can do better and I think it’s worth noting that there are many places that have done better. Rural is not a wasteland for Internet access. North Dakota has tremendous Internet access and that’s because local providers — cooperatives and local companies — have done a really good job of investing there. In many places that have been left behind it’s because of the big companies that haven’t seen a reason to invest.
