The Save the Albatross Coalition was initiated by recycling activists through the Grass Roots Recycling Network, founded in 1995. ILSR’s Brenda Platt and Neil Seldman were two of the five co-founders of GRRN. The Coalition aims to address the earth’s global plastic pollution problem through responsible behavior by companies that generate the plastic products that threaten our oceans. Neil Seldman co-chairs the Save the Albatross Coalition with Captain Charles Moore of Algalita Research and Education, based in Long beach, CA.
Their campaign goals:
- Educate consumers that there is no “away” and that Zero Waste is the correct direction for social behavior.
- Bring attention to the unintended impacts of disposable plastics and other non-recycled discards.
- Spotlight the Albatross and what is happening on Midway Atoll and the Northwest Hawaiian Island Chain.
- Motivate identified generators to pay for plastic cleanup on Midway and other US Pacific Islands which are nesting areas for the Laysan and Black-footed Albatross.
- Bring Producers to the table to draft responsibility plans for discarded plastic via buy back purchases, minimizing plastic content in their products, and on recovery campaigns for vagrant plastics on land and sea.
