Should burning garbage in downtown Baltimore be given $10 million in subsidies since 2011 because the state of Maryland calls it ‘green’?
The garbage incineration/Renewable Energy Porfolio Standard (RPS) nexus is discussed in the Baltimore Sun‘s series Power Struggle; “How a Trash-Incinerator-Baltimore’s Biggest Polluter-Became ‘Green’ Energy”.
The waste-to-energy industry helped write the state legislation that qualifies it for the coveted subsidies under the Renewable Portfolio Standard. Maryland is the only state to award such Tier 1 status to trash-burning. This puts the incinerator on par with wind energy under the RPS.
